Corneliu Baba
Great portraitist and painter of the tragic 'Mad Kings'.
Baba made his name with sober portraits and scenes of peasant life, then, from the 1970s, with the haunting 'Mad Kings' and 'Harlequins' series — veiled reflections on power and fear under dictatorship. His brushwork is dense and nervous, his palette dark and earthy.
