Ion Andreescu
Austere, lyrical landscape painter whose short life produced masterpieces of colour.
Andreescu taught drawing in Buzău before travelling to Paris and Barbizon in 1879. His sober, melancholic landscapes and still lifes — beech forests, winter roads, flowers in a jug — show a rare density of colour. He died of tuberculosis at 32, and is often paired with Grigorescu and Luchian as the 'founding trio' of Romanian modern painting.
