RO-ART-1838-NG
Nicolae Grigorescu
Founder of modern Romanian painting — ox carts, shepherd girls and luminous landscapes.
Grigorescu began as an icon painter (the murals of Agapia Monastery) before joining the Barbizon painters in France. Back home he became the painter of Romanian rural life, working en plein air with a fresh, airy palette. As a war artist in 1877–78 he recorded the War of Independence. His image of the peasant ox cart became an emblem of Romanian identity.
