Victor Brauner

1903 – 1966 Piatra Neamț

Surrealist visionary of the eye, magic and hybrid creatures.

Brauner co-founded the magazine 75HP in Bucharest (1924) before joining André Breton's surrealists in Paris. His 'Self-Portrait with a Plucked Eye' (1931) eerily anticipated the loss of his own eye in 1938. His later works fuse esoterica, myth and hybrid beings, as in 'Wolf-Table'. He represented France at the 1966 Venice Biennale.
