Nicolae Tonitza
Master of children's portraits with wide, melancholic eyes.
Tonitza studied in Iași and Munich and worked as a fierce press illustrator before becoming one of the most loved Romanian painters. His portraits of children, Lipovan girls and the light of Balchik and Mangalia are rendered with luminous colour and a distinctive linear grace. Co-founder of the 'Group of Four' (1925).
